Changing Direction - W6

Since last week's tutorial, I've been re-thinking what I plan to do for the placement. I've decided that my current plan of making a zine in partnership might not be the best idea for the placement, as I'm not experienced enough in making zines at this point in time. I feel that I would be taking on too big of a commitment and I would worry that I would not be able to produce a final product I am happy with. If I want to make a zine it should be with other individuals who are more knowledgeable about zine-making than myself. While thinking this over I had a discussion with Will, a master's student studying Fine Art at Staffs, and he mentioned that he had spoken to Jessica Longmore about me wanting to make a zine as part of my placement. Jess ran the Staffs Zine Workshop during Innovation Week which I participated in last January. According to Will, Jess remembered my participation in the Zine Workshop and was happy with what I produced and would be interested in working with me on the next Zine Project Workshop.

Although I hadn't originally wanted to do a workshop, I think it would be a good opportunity to go outside of my comfort zone. I'm afraid of running a workshop as I'm not usually comfortable speaking in front of a group of people and telling them what to do. However, this might be the best time to get experience in running a workshop before leaving University. If I do end up enjoying it, it could be a great career path to go down. Moreover, if I do the workshop in partnership with Jess, I won't be completely on my own and I'll be able to ask for support if I need it. Taking all this into consideration, I'm going to move forward with trying to run a Zine Workshop in partnership with Jess for my placement.
