Staffordshire University Art Collection Exhibition - W3
Recently I was asked by Lorna if I was interested in helping out with the curation of the Staffordshire University Art Collection for its exhibition in Henrion Gallery. Helping out would involve helping decide where each work would be exhibited in the gallery and then installing them alongside Eve, Lorna and Liz under the guidance of Michael Branthwaite. I accepted as I thought this would be a valuable opportunity to find out what goes into curating an exhibition as I wasn't planning on doing one for my placement.
Lorna and Eve had previously already curated the exhibition for a Cadman Gallery however, I was not able to see it at the time. Eve said it would be valuable to have two fresh sets of eyes for the exhibition as it might result in a different feel to the exhibition in Henrion.
Before the exhibition, we spent one day figuring out what pieces to include in the exhibition and where they will go in the space. The next day we worked together to install the artworks using spirit levels, screws and drills. It was a good experience getting to experience what it takes to put an exhibition together. Additionally, I learned how to operate a drill and install paintings onto a wall using screws. This experience has been valuable towards my practice as this process may be the way I choose to install my paintings in the future. Moreover, knowing how the curation process transpires might affect how I make my work, whether it be on canvas or a piece displayed in a frame.
