Proposal - W9
Writing my proposal went smoother than I had expected despite the short time I had to write it before I met with Jess. I decided to give a name to the zine workshop to differentiate the project from last year's zine workshop. I decided to focus on 'outsiders' as this is the subject matter I'm currently exploring within my studio practice. I thought that 'outsiders' as a theme would work well with zines in general as, due to their history, zines are associated often with non-mainstream interests and opinions. I am hoping that this workshop will be able to attract a variety of students who may feel like outsiders and create a safe space for everyone to participate, if they want to, and create an amazing zine. This means that while also gaining valuable experience from trying to run a workshop for the first time, I am also able to gather perspectives on feelings of being an outsider from people outside of my immediate circle of peers which can help inform my studio practice.
I decided to include a mock-up of a poster in my proposal as it might help articulate my plans for the promotion of the workshop, which I am most excited about. I previously enjoyed designing promotional material for an online exhibition, Bitter Reality, so I think that the marketing side of this project might come easier to me in contrast to the public speaking aspects. I wasn't sure about a lot of the aspects of how the workshop would run in regards to covid restrictions so I mentioned this heavily in my proposal. I hope that we will be able to run the workshop in person as I think it will be easier to present in an environment where I can see everyone's reactions, online workshops tend to feel more impersonal and some participants might fall into the background which I want to avoid.
